A couple of years ago, if I recall correctly, our state's
university system considered Turnitin, and decided not to, in part based
on the Board of Regents' attorney's opinion that it could create legal
liability (related to intellectual property rights, I believe). Our
department has considered it off and on but has not adopted it - there
are supporters and opponents.

Subject: [Teaching_Composition] Turnitin.com -- ethical/legal questions
Hi everyone:
A colleague of mine recently received a complaint from a student who
argued
that Turnitin.com violated her rights. So I wanted to hear from others
who
might have had students raise similar objections -- or who might have
similar objections of their own.
So, I guess this is a quick survey for those who wouldn't mind replying:
1. Do you use Turnitin.com? If you've considered it and decided
against
it, why?
2. If you do use it, have you ever had a student raise such objections?
If
so, how did you respond?
3. Would a student who claimed that Turnitin.com violated his/her
rights
have a legal leg to stand on?
Thanks in advance to any who might respond.
Best,
