Irv--Would you really recognize the authority of someone whose research and
study take place beyond the university?  !Maybe you would--I don't know!)
But I do know that, for many, "study" and "research" at the levels you are
referring to happen only within a university setting, and are only
recognized as legitimate in that setting.  (Well.  Corporate settings, too,
sometimes, but that complicates "ownership" in other ways, and "research,"
too.)
