[Teaching_Composition] NEW MODULE

Irv,

I won't speak for the wiki version Jeff's describing. But you could
download wiki software from a number of different places, depending on which
wiki you wanted (there are many flavors of wiki, each using variations on
basic wiki markup and with different extra features). I can confirm what
Jeff says about ease of installation, though.

Some considerations for you. Wikis will operate on various server operating
systems (Linux, Windows, etc.), so as you shop, keep that in mind. Some
wikis need a database connection (such as MySQL; others don't (the one we
use, for instance, needs no database).

You can learn about and download PmWiki (the one we use at TAMU-CC and for
CompFAQs) at http://www.pmwiki.org.

One advantage we find to using PmWiki is that Pm (Patrick Michaud, the wiki
developer) is very accessible via email to help with installation and other
issues.

Glenn

Length of time depends on the knowledge you bring with you to any task
(fixing a car, writing an essay, painting the wall, etc.).

So for installing a wiki system - whatever flavor it is since there are so
many *kinds* of wikis - how much time it takes depends on the system's setup
but it also depends on the person doing the work.

It takes *me* a few minutes.
Download the file
Upload the file to the server
Unpack the file
Make a database
Fill in the slots of the GUI interface for the wiki (which ask you where
your database is located, your password, etc).

Click "install."

That's it.

If you don't know how to download, upload, unpack etc. it will probably take
you longer since you will first have to familiarize yourself with these
actions.

Jeff
