If anyone has any additional comments or criticisms for my module, feel free to email me personally at noah.s.hilgert@wmich.edu. I'd like to thank Laura Gray-Rosendale for the opportunity to do this module and give a small little soap box for my views, and to Anne Harvey for logistics of this protect succeed, and to McGrawHill for making the listserv and this discussion possible. ------=_NextPart_000_0030_01C8126D.F13AFFD0-- From Duane.Roen@asu.edu Sun Oct 21 16:08:50 2007 From: Duane.Roen@asu.edu (Duane Roen) Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2007 08:08:50 -0700 Subject: [Teaching_Basic_Writing] Teaching Basic Writing Coffee Chat: Investing Writers Message-ID: Dear Colleagues, Sherry Rankins-Roberston and I invite you to join us in conversation about our module at McGraw-Hill's Teaching Basic Writing site: http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/english/tbw/oct.html In the module, Sherry and I talk about our experiences with using family history as a tool for engaging students in writing that they find inherently interesting. Like us, many of our students have a passion for writing about family members, family events, and family places. We believe that faculty can help students become more invested in writing if they see it as relevant not only to their academic lives, but also to their professional, civic, and personal lives. After all, many of our students will say farewell to the academic arena of life the moment they graduate--or leave school without graduating. However, these same students will need to use writing in the professional, civic, and personal arenas of life for many decades to come. For many of our students, family history holds an important place in the personal arena of life, which gives us an opportunity to help them see that writing can have personal importance in their lives. We are convinced that writing about family history is no less or no more intellectually rigorous than writing about any other topics. Further, engaging students in such writing helps them learn what they need to know about effective writing for a variety of audiences, purposes, and contexts. For instance, when we consider writing about family history in light of the "WPA Outcomes Statement for First-Year Composition" (http://www.wpacouncil.org/positions/outcomes.html), we see how writing about family history invites students to develop rhetorical knowledge; critical reading, writing, and thinking; composing processes; and knowledge of conventions. Last year in the first-year writing course at the University of California at Berkeley, my daughter, Hanna, enjoyed the writing that she did. However, the writing project that captured her attention the most was one focused on family history. She invested scores of hours poring through family records and photographs and interviewing family members. She learned about family history, but her family members (including her parents)gained some new and interesting perspectives on the family's past and the present. By the way, we are so committed to writing about family history that we have developed many related courses and a degree concentration (Writing and Recording Family History) at Arizona State University. We are eager to hear your thoughts about this topic. Although we have offered some discussion questions at the end of the module, we hope that you will offer other questions and comments. Thank you for joining us. Best, Duane Duane Roen, Head Faculty of Humanities and Arts Professor of English School of Applied Arts and Sciences Arizona State University 7001 E.
