Kimberly and Marcia both respond to Sugie's latest post, pointing out
the severe
reading problems our basic writers have. I'd suggest that many of our
best-prepared students have the same problems, though they may have learned to
mask them. I used to ask the teachers of our upper-division writing course at
Cal State to assign a short summary of a reading passage, an eye-opener for
them: fully half of these advanced students would not understand what
they were
passing their eyes over, even when they yellow-marked passages. I'd like to
learn more about how we should be teaching reading in all of our writing
courses. --Ed White
