Molly, I think that the point you make about learning something that you are not naturally good in (or unpracticed?) is a great suggestion. It makes us like our students and reminds us of what it's like to be learning. Sometimes I wish that I could see how my students are interpreting what I teach or what we talk about in a conference. It's like there's a basic text and then there's an overhead sheet called "professor's understanding," and another one called "student's understanding." Remembering what it was like to be new at something is one way to interpret that second sheet.
